THE HIGH/SCOPE APPROACH TO EARLY YEARS LEARNING

Screen Shot 2014-10-28 at 09.21.49At St Peter’s, our children are educated through the High / Scope approach to early years learning. This is where adults and children share control of the teaching and learning process. Children in St Peter’s are immersed in an environment where learning takes place by way of interactions. Our classroom is characterised by the constant hum of conversation, as the children express their basic need to communicate ideas. We focus on children’s strengths and abilities and because the supporting adults accept that that learning comes from within, these children develop a sense of initiative and responsibility that positively affects subsequent learning and life decisions.

GREETING TIME  – Children come to the greeting mat to say their morning prayer. This time is also when important news and announcements can be shared, through symbols and words on the message board.

SMALL GROUP TIME – The children (in groups of 9) experiment with materials and solve problems in an activity adults have chosen for a particular purpose. This could be related to children’s interests, themes of seasonal topics, to introduce new materials and equipment of the High/Scope Key Developmental Indicators.

PLANNING TIME – The child (with their group leader) will decide what to do; they state their plan of action for work time.

WORK TIME – Children begin by choosing the appropriate materials / equipment to carry out their initial plan and other self initiated materials. Children may decide to work / play alone or with others. As children work, adults pay close attention; observing, supporting and assisting when necessary. A buffet snack is offered during this time.

TIDY UP TIME – At the end of work time children tidy away materials and equipment.

RECALL – Children meet again with their group to share and discuss what they have done. Recalling helps children to reflect on, understand and build on their actions.

STORY TIME – Children listen to / share a story with a familiar adult.Screen Shot 2014-10-28 at 09.13.36

DINNER TIME – Dinner is served in the nursery building.

OUTSIDE TIME – Children can play outside with wheeled toys, climbing equipment, outdoor art   materials etc. This is also followed by a tidy up time in which children are expected to participate.

LARGE GROUP TIME – Children come together again with all members of the class.  At this time they may sing a song, say an action rhyme, play movement games or other such group activities.
