Inspiring the Next Generation

Recently, Primary 5 took part in a Smart Energy Programme with Sentinus Engineering Ambassador, Ciaran, focusing on renewable energy technologies.  The children discovered that wind is one of the main sources of renewable energy in Ireland. After some discussion, we learnt that own of our P5 pupils, Conor, has his own wind turbine for generating energy. As a result, we decided that we would make individual wind turbines.

The Sentinus Programmes promote engagement in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, and, as this topic had a STEM theme, our first task was to build a support structure.

We worked in pairs and engaged in problem solving to ensure that the paper blades for the wind turbine would turn.

Finally, we had great fun testing our wind turbines outside and we discussed how we could improve them to create more energy.

For more information, head over to the SENTINUS website and find out about their schools’ programmes.
