P6 Summit All Up – Hillwalking Adventure

Over the past number of weeks, the Primary Six classes were given the chance to go hill-walking in Kilbroney Forest Park.  Having worked with Phil and Colm Clarke on previous adventures, we knew that the children were in for a great day!

As the preparations began, there was lots of excitement as the children sorted their walking boots, waterproof clothing and transferred their gear into funky backpacks.

Off to Kilbroney we went, disembarked, and began the walk from the bottom car park by heading off on the beaten track.   As we followed a meandering stream, the children were told about all the different animals and habitats that are to be found in Kilbroney Forest.

The climb was steep at times, but the P6s were hardy in their pursuit of the summit, and with sweat on the their brows, they made it to ‘The Big Stone’!

The views were amazing and there were lots of gasps (although that might just have been Mr McP trying to catch his breath!)

Soon it was time for lunch, and the children got to use the shelter tents as makeshift restaurants. During the descent, about halfway down, everyone had a lovely treat of hot chocolate, which was cooked on gas stoves.

Nearing the end of the walk, things got a little quieter and, despite the adults thinking that everyone was taking in all that nature had to offer, it was probably due to the fact the children had very little energy left after a gruelling 3.5 mile hike!

Back on the bus and school-ward bound, there were many sets of tired legs, heavy eyes, but a lot of smiles!

Using WordArt at school, the P6 children came up with some great words to describe their day.  Click on the link here to see their amazing work!

What a day! What a walk! My legs still haven’t recovered, but all worth it to see the views from Cloughmore Stone!

Sounds like you all have a lot of fun. That sure is a steep climb at Kilbroney. The last time I visited, there was certainly NO hot chocolate on offer. Please, P6, take me with you on your next Hillwalking Adventure!

Well done Primary Six and Mr McParland, sounds like you had a brilliant day in Kilbroney and the hot chocolate was well deserved after walking all the way to the ‘big stone’. ☕️⛰
